Rochdale
inspiredspaces and its joint venture partners in the Local Education Partnership (LEP), reached financial close on the £192 million Rochdale Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme in January 2010. Rochdale’s programme forms part of the UK Government’s Building Schools for the Future programme.
The LEP, which comprises Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council, International Public Partnership Limited and Carillion, will initially deliver fourteen secondary schools. This will include four privately financed schools (to which Carillion will provide facilities management services over a 25 year concession period) and eight refurbished/remodelled schools. All 14 schools within Rochdale’s BSF programme will be completed by the end of 2013.
Carillion began construction in January 2010 on the first two schemes: Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College and Siddal Moor Sports College. Hollingworth Business and Enterprise was completed on 5th September 2011, and the new teaching accommodation block at Siddal Moor was completed on the 5th May 2011.

The LEP will deliver all aspects of the BSF process from inception to completion, helping Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council to deliver educational transformation through the procurement of innovative school accommodation and related services. A key part of this will be the provision by the LEP of state of the art ICT facilities within each secondary school.
By creating radically improved school environments and educational climates, inspiredspaces Rochdale in partnership with Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council will create the transformational step change for learners and the wider communities.
Carillion chief executive, John McDonough, said: “We are delighted to have secured financial close for this major programme and look forward to building a strong and successful relationship with Rochdale, its head teachers and their staff, to provide schools that will enable them to deliver a first-class learning experience for their students, as well as high-quality community facilities.”
Key to inspiredspaces selection was the understanding of Rochdale’s educational vision and how - through an approach to partnership underpinned by shared values - this vision can be realised.
To Date
The Rochdale BSF programme now has 4 major projects on site. Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College and Siddal Moor Sports College commenced on site 18th January 2010. Cardinal Langley RC High School and Matthew Moss High School commenced on site 3rd July 2010.
inspiredspaces and Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council have commenced work on developing the educational vision for the next set of schemes, this involves engaging with the schools to confirm their thoughts and vision. Once this work is complete, there is then a series of engagements with each school to develop the detailed design for that site.
