Nailsea School, Technology and Media Arts College

Carillion has completed the first phase of the works at the 30 million Nailsea Community School Project for client, North Somerset District Council.

The scheme is a one-school pathfinder project being funded by the Department for Children Schools and Families as part of the government’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme. The school opened in September 2009 for the commencement of the new academic year. Demolition works to the existing school and landscaping works will continue through until contract completion in Summer 2010.

The site is in the centre of the town of Nailsea and is surrounded by residential properties with mature boundaries in a semi-rural environment. Pedestrian access to the school is from all 4 corners of the site, with approximately 70% of students walking to school.

The school is at the heart of the Nailsea community and our design solution makes the provision of facilities for ‘out of hours use’ possible. These amenities include the use of:

  • the sports facilities (internal and external);
  • the IT business suite;
  • the art studios; and
  • the main theatre.

North Somerset District Council stipulated the requirement that at least 15% of energy used is derived from locally generated sources. However, the project is currently targeting 40% plus of renewable energy sources with the use of the following systems:

  • Biomass boiler - these boilers provide renewable energy heating using environmentally friendly bio-fuels;
  • solar thermal for hot water;
  • Hybrolight wireless lighting columns to 10% of the external lighting requirement - Hybrolight is a hybrid renewable energy exterior unit that is powered by energy from the sun and wind;
  • rainwater harvesting to provide water for flushing the WCs.

The design is also required to meet strict carbon-neutral requirements which need to be 60% below the 1992 building regulations. This also enables the authority to obtain additional funding for the project.
