Joseph Rowntree New School

City of York Council has signed a contract worth around 29million with Carillion for the design and build of the new Joseph Rowntree School. This is a One School Pathfinder project with landscape/reinstatement works thereafter and is expected to be ready for use by February 2010.

The new buildings will be on the same site as the existing school, surrounded by parkland and domestic housing. The aesthetics of the new buildings are paramount to the new design ensuring they blend in with the existing rural surroundings and village environment.

The rapport that has developed with York City Council has enabled the Carillion team to have a thorough understanding of the Councils’ key drivers, processes and protocols and of course to build the trust of the client through an open and honest engagement process. This relationship, developed through the engagement and bidding process, has ensured that an inspirational and exciting design has been created within the funding allowance.

The design integrates a number of key sustainable features to ensure a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’ is achieved:

  • orientation
  • natural shading
  • thermal mass - any material that has the capacity to store heat. When used correctly, it can significantly reduce the requirement for active heating and cooling systems and the consumption of active solar, renewable energy, and especially fossil fuel technologies.
  • natural ventilation
  • ground pipes – these absorb warmth from the ground to provide heating/cooling and hot water;
  • rainwater harvesting to provide water for flushing the WCs;
  • green roof – this is a roof covered with vegetation and soil, or a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane and provides many sustainable benefits; and
  • Biomass boiler - these boilers provide renewable energy heating using environmentally friendly bio-fuels.

Carillion Training Services (CTS) was actively involved in the development of the proposals for this project. CTS is the UK Construction Industry’s largest employer-based apprenticeship training programme employing over 1,300 young apprentices every year. Their involvement in the Joseph Rowntree New School not only helps integrate construction operations with the curriculum but also guarantees training and employment opportunities for members of the local community through the construction phase.
