Basildon Academies

Carillion reached financial close on the 20.5 million Basildon Upper Academies contract in May 2009. Works are already progressing well on the 20 million Basildon Lower Academy contract awarded by Essex County Council last year. Both projects entail part refurbishment and part new build of two federated secondary schools, Barstable and Chalvedon School, in East Basildon. These schools will become academies in September 2009.

Carillion are the design and build contractor for the new facilities that will allow the Barstable site to operate as the Lower Academy (accommodating pupils aged 11-14) and the Chalvedon site to operate as the Upper Academy (accommodating pupils aged 14-19).

The Lower Academy refurbished blocks are on programme for occupation this Autumn with the new build block due for completion in September 2010.

Construction of the Upper Academy will begin in July 2009 with overall completion scheduled for Autumn 2011.

Lower Academy Entrance

The Academies will facilitate a new way of delivering teaching through the formation of 'learning clusters', instead of the traditional 'departmental' approach where pupils move around the school between lessons to access different classrooms and laboratories. The new facilities will be organised in a series of clusters arranged by year group across both the Lower and Upper Academy.

Carillion have undertaken a series of Enterprise days with students from years 7 and 8 of the predecessor schools and also placed two work experience students in the site offices for two weeks in March which was a very rewarding experience all round.

Community use is a big driver for the Academy's sponsor, and the Academies’ 'Enterprise' specialism has been reflected by the incorporation of a public-facing 'Enterprise Zone' at the Upper Academy. This will enable students to engage in vocational training, gaining an understanding of commerce and other activities, by encouraging access by the public and the business community to this shared area, which also facilitates access to sporting facilities, performance areas and meeting spaces. Active and passive security measures will prevent access by the public to the rest of the school.

East Basildon Academy

Carillion’s Director - Education, Rob Holt, said; “We are delighted to have been selected by Essex County Council to deliver this exciting new scheme. This is a particularly challenging project as it requires working in live school environments on both sites. The design work in connection with the Lower Academy in particular was challenging as it involves several listed elements which must be retained. Despite these factors the Carillion team has been able to achieve BREEAM pre-assessment ratings of 'Very Good' for both sites. We’re now looking forward to starting work on site and helping Essex County Council and the Academies’ Sponsor achieve their objective of educational excellence.”
